Defense Dominates In Benedictine Shutout

Written by Dan Levindofske '10 on October 7, 2009.

Hoping to end a two-game losing streak, the Eagles took on the Benedictine Bengals this past weekend. Benedictine came ready to play but failed to even get inside the Eagle 30-yard line. Shane McManamon was a tackle machine, and the running backs ran hard as Germany Woods and Brandon Cardinal each had 136 yards and a touchdown. Phil Smith also did his part pitching in an interception. The final result was a 17-0 victory.

The team was just a week removed from the forgettable Cincinnati Elder game. Elder quarterback Mark Miller finished 25 of 27 passing, leading to a 38-14 route. However, there were some bright spots like Aaron Marrero 95-yard kickoff return and an athletic Corey Blackstock interception in the corner of the end zone.

A few weeks ago, Inkster (Michigan) collected their first win of the season, 14-7 over the Eagles. However, the defense only gave up 14 points to an offense that was averaging 33 a game. This was mostly due to the defensive ends containing quarterback Devin Gardner, a Michigan recruit. Offensively, Nate Stanley showed off his hands with four catches.

Erie Prep Preview

Tomorrow the Eagles will challenge Erie Prep in what is possibly a must win game. Erie Prep is a former powerhouse team in Pennsylvania. They come into the game with a 3-1 record and a head coach who won a state title with 2007 NFL Defensive Player of the Year Bob Sanders. Senior quarterback Shyquawn Pullium is easily the best athlete on the team. Pullium is 6-0, 172 pounds and is the fastest quarterback on the schedule. He is being recruited by several ACC schools and has an explosive halfback lining up next to him. In order to win this game, the Eagles must contain Pullium and stop the big play on defense. On the offensive side of the ball, they have to give Erie Prep a steady dose of the run and avoid turnovers.
