Despite a crushing defeat against St. Ignatius on September 28 at Westwood Country Club, the St. Edward Varsity Golf Team is confident as they head into Sectionals on October 6.
On a cold day with wind gusts approaching 50 miles per hour, St. Ed’s faced off against the Wildcats, one of the top ranked golf teams in the state. Unfortunately, the weather conditions adversely affected both teams’ performances, and the Eagles fell 155-186.
The team now turns its attention to Sectionals, which take place at Sweetbriar Golf Course in Avon Lake on October 5 (full results were not available at publication). Seniors Mike Ols, Bryan Willard, and Joe Devries, junior Zach Champa, and sophomore Brian Bir along with alternate senior Kevin Heisser were sent by the team to compete at Sectionals.
Junior Mike Swartz offered his prediction saying, “We will perform well at sectionals; we perform as a team, there is no standout player. Everyone contributes, that’s what makes us so good.”
After Sectionals, if successful, the Varsity team will move on to Districts and hopefully States. Both Swartz and his teammates believe a return to States isn’t out of the question.
