Eagle Soccer Glides Towards Playoffs

Written by Josh Mueller '11 on October 7, 2009.

With five games left in the season, the varsity soccer team now stands at 4-5-2. The team is coming off a showdown last Saturday with Dublin Coffman at Columbus Crew Stadium. Unfortunately, they were defeated 3-1 by the Rocks, with the lone goal scored by senior captain Pat Murray.

Before the Coffman game, the Eagles had notched an impressive win against their undefeated city rivals, the Lakewood Rangers. In an all-out battle, they handily disposed of the Rangers 2-0 on goals by senior Bobby Rowheder, who was assisted on the corner kick by senior captain Kevin Spackman, and Pat Murray on an assist from junior starter Kyle Nieman.

This win followed a 1-0 loss under stormy conditions against a determined Lake Catholic side at home. However, the Eagles had traveled to Toledo prior to the Lake Catholic loss to face St. John’s Jesuit, ranked tenth in Ohio, and notched arguably their most impressive victory of the season. They defeated the Titans 1-0 on a stunning goal by senior Eric Haecker.

On September 23, the team faced a strong St. Ignatius squad, currently ranked number one in the nation. They suffered a heartbreaking 2-0 loss to the Wildcats in front of a sellout crowd at St. Ignatius.

The Eagles have had by far the most difficult schedule of any Greater Cleveland team and look to close out their season with wins over Avon, North Royalton, Avon Lake, Toledo St. Francis (ranked #9 in the state), and Erie Prep. The playoffs begin October 19, and the team hopes to make a strong bid for the district championship.
