JV Soccer Falls Short

Written by Connor Roth '11 on October 29, 2009.

The season ended abruptly this year for the JV Eagles when their final opponent, Erie Cathedral Prep, canceled the game due to traveling difficulties. The 2009 Eagles posted a record of 3-6-4, with a recent heartbreaking loss to Avon Lake. The Shoremen scored the game-winning goal with less than two minutes for a 3-2 win.

This year, the junior varsity suffered many unfortunate losses because of mistakes made within the first or last few minutes of their games. On the other hand, a few promising results this year were a 1-0 win over a strong Bay Village team, a 0-0 tie against Solon, and a 1-0 win over Lake Catholic.

While their record did not accurately represent how well the team competed with other challenging teams, it served to emphasize the lesson that a single lapse of focus can result in a game-changing moment. Coach Jim Duffy was impressed with his team’s efforts, “The team had very good chemistry and even though we had a number of losses each one served as a learning opportunity. The team was a pleasure to coach, I would describe this team as very coachable.”

The graduation of ten seniors will make it possible for many current freshmen and sophomores to develop as players and fill the gaps on next year’s varsity squad. According to Coach Duffy, “The players on the team quickly recognized the physical nature of high school soccer and have made a firm commitment to training in the off season. The future looks bright for this group of Edsmen who are commt- ted to doing well both on the field and in the classroom.”
