Quest Retreat Defines Manhood

Written by Adam Al-natsheh '12 on October 29, 2009.

The 2009-2010 school year is the second year in which St. Edward offers its Quest Retreat. Run by religion teach- ers Mr. Mike Reiling and Mr. Bill Fichter, the three-day retreat experience allows upperclassmen to escape the pressures and stresses of school and focus on their transition into manhood.

Although it is in its second year of operation, the Quest Retreat is complex and well organized. There are presenta- tions and speeches given by the two moderators, quiet times for self-reflection and meditation, and campfire conversations. Another interesting part of the retreat is an outdoor “game,” although not a game in the general use of the word. It is way of guiding the St. Edward upperclassmen toward the challenges of adulthood.

Another purpose of the Quest Retreat is to reflect on the influence men have on each other. As Mr. Reiling stated, “Something that only men can do for each other is to affirm their manhood.” The retreat focuses on helping men help each other and connecting spiritually with their manhood.

The first Quest Retreat took place on October 14-16 at Camp Asbury. Twelve St. Edward students attended the retreat plus the two faculty moderators. The sec- ond retreat will take place on March 25-27 at a location to be determined.
