In their past competitions at both the Claymont Band Roundup and the Brunswick Sound Spectacular, the Marching Eagles have earned an overall rating of a one, equivalent to a superior.
This is a major accomplishment for any Ohio marching band. By receiving an overall rating of a one at any state qualifying competition, a band qualifies for the Ohio Music Education Association (OMEA) State Finals. This is a goal that few marching bands achieve each year.
In order to even have a shot at reaching this goal, the band begins with practices in late June followed by a performance at the Lakewood Fourth of July parade. The band then participates in a week-long band camp in early August followed by innumerable hours of practice for a chance to rate superior at the OMEA State Finals.
If the band can earn a superior rating at states, it will be an achievement greater than any superb qualifying competition performance. The State Finals for the Marching Eagles take place Friday, November 6 in Columbus. This gives the band less than two weeks to perfect their competition show, “Mask,” conceived by director Robert W. Burns. Under the direction of Burns, senior Drum Major Tom Richmond, and experienced section members, the goal is not unfeasible.
