The October release of Embryonic marks the twelfth studio album by alternative rock band, The Flaming Lips. The Lips have received criticism in the past for not sticking to their roots by venturing out of the experimental and into a more lighthearted pop-rock genre. Fans of The Flaming Lips’ early work will be more than delighted when they get to experience the musical journey that is Embryonic.
Embryonic is a 2-disc, 18 track juggernaut album, packed with over an hour of unsettling instrumentals, diverse vocals, and unbelievable stories within songs. Embryonic is a record that will certainly have you asking yourself, “What did I just hear?” When first encountered, Embryonic will likely confuse and overwhelm listeners. It is certainly an album that takes some getting used to. Once acclimated to the eerie genius of front man Wayne Coyne and The Flaming Lips, however, listeners are guaranteed to appreciate and enjoy the incredible neo-psychedelic sound, which can be found hardly anywhere else in record stores today.
“Evil,” which occurs relatively early in the CD, is a typical Lips-like ballad that settles things before the album goes absolutely “hang wire,” taking listeners on a magic carpet ride so unstable that the great Aladdin wouldn’t be able to hang on. “See the Leaves” monotonously speaks of a dying-out environment. “Sagittarius Silver Announcement” is a cultish monologue that flows smoothly into the metal onslaught of “Worm Mountain.” The album’s climax lies within the chords of the seven-minute “Powerless,” where a spellbinding bass riff slowly yields its way into a multi-dimensional, extravagant guitar freak out.
For fans of The Flaming Lips, it doesn’t get much better than Embryonic. It’s incredibly unique sound will have you listening to it over and over. The Flaming Lips hit home with this late-2009 installment, but as they say, “Save the best for last.” Embryonic is easily one of the best albums of the year.
