Although widely known in hip hop’s underground community, Apathy has seen little to no exposure in today’s rap scene. His only real claim to fame is being a member of the Philadelphia super-group, The Army of the Pharos. Nearly three years after his highly rated (but mostly unknown) album known as Eastern Philosophy, Apathy has finally released Wanna Snuggle?
In a fairly uneventful year for hip hop, Wanna Snuggle? stands out. The underground artist really shines on this album. Apathy’s lyrics are both interesting and potent like on the song, “Candy,” which tells a classic story with an interesting twist, or the song, “Victim” featuring Holly Brook, which tells a unique and disturbing tale.
The album is also very varied and is able to contain very somber songs like “No Sad Tomorrow” featuring Mike Mass and very upbeat type tracks like “Back in LA.” Because many of the songs contain a sample from the 1950’s or 1960’s, some of the songs do sound the same, but the production quality is excellent. Another problem is that some of the features are subpar, but Apathy makes up for most of these shortcomings with his own verses.
Overall Wanna Snuggle? is an excellent album, whether you’re a fan of Apathy or not. Those who are familiar with Eastern Philosophy will love this album. Even if you are not familiar with Apathy, I suggest you give Wanna Snuggle? a listen. Not only are the songs well made, but they will also appeal to a wide audience.
Score: 9/10
Rating: “Any Day,” “Back in LA,” “Candy,” “Guys and Girls,” “No Sad Tomorrow,” “Victim”
