Grand Funk Railroad was an outstanding band during the 1970’s, with their main achievement being their breakthrough album, Closer to Home. The original three members of the band are Mark Farner, Mel Schacher, and Don Brewer. The hit single, “I’m Your Captain,” launched the band into mainstream rock with its smooth melody and swift rhythm. Birds are heard calling in the background to represent the story of a man lost at sea who is trying to find peace. Mark Farner’s voice is consistently in harmony with Don Brewer’s assisting vocals throughout each record.
In 1972, Grand Funk Railroad added Craig Frost as a permanent keyboard player. GFR’s other well-known album, We’re An American Band, was made popular by hits such as “Walk Like a Man” and the album’s titular track. In recent years a Greatest Hits album has been released that contains other popular hits such as “Feelin Alright,” “Shinin’ On,” “Some Kind of Wonderful,” and a cover of the Rolling Stone’s “Gimme Shelter.”
Grand Funk Railroad’s Greatest Hits album would appeal to anyone looking for an alternative rock-styled band with a smooth guitar sound, powerful lyrics, and a jazzy tone sounding much different from the stereotypical “classic rock band” from that time.
