A few weeks ago the annual rivalry between St. Ed’s and St. Ignatius took place when the Eagles hosted the Wildcats. Unfortunately, our fans did not see the end result that they had hoped for as Iggy walked away with yet another win against the football team.
Our offense controlled the ball early, readily marching down the field, but was unable to get into the end zone. However, Ignatius had two big plays in a row to regain the momentum, which they held for the rest of the game leading to a 28-0 victory.
The Eagles installed a wildcat formation sporting Odis Prunty ’10 at quarterback, which helped the offense account for almost 200 yards on the ground. Nate Stanley ’10 had a good performance with two catches, a completed pass, and another dropped ball that could have gone for a long touchdown. Matt Newman ’10 finished his career with a solid game, and some of the younger guys stepped up on defense.
The season may not have turned out as many had wanted, but some progress was made and the team only looks to improve. For all the Eagle faithful, there is still hope for the future. There appears to be a significant amount of young talent on this team moving forward.
Coach Rich Finotti did not hesitate to point out another positive from this past season – leadership. “We’ve defined a lot of roles and identified some leaders that are going to be in position to lead this team into the future.”
When asked whether or not the expectations for next year would be higher and what they needed to do to avoid a repeat of this season, Coach Finotti responded, “ We have to make a commitment to each other. They can’t let each other down. It’s all about the team not about themselves.”
