An Open Letter to Browns Owner Randy Lerner

Written by Matt Unger '10 on November 20, 2009.

Dear Mr. Lerner,

While you have been spared the temporary embarrassment of a non-sellout and television blackout on Monday Night Football, television blackouts will be a reality in the final two home games and next season if the team remains on its current path.

The Cleveland Browns organization has become an embarrassment to its city and fans. The team’s record of 55-114 since 1999 and current ranking in the bottom two on offense and defense in the NFL paint a vivid picture of the team’s state.

We know that you want the Browns to win and will use your money to spur the team to success. But, you also run the team like a fan, not a leader like Dan Gilbert. When fans wanted a tough coach, you hired Eric Mangini without further evaluating other options for the position.

Also, what is the team’s identity? In the AFC North, both Pittsburgh and Baltimore have traditionally been known for their hard-nosed, shutdown defenses while Cincinnati is noted for its explosive offense. Meanwhile, the only identity the Browns have is their lack of one along with their horrid run defense.

Finally, a lack of playmakers hurts the team. Kellen Winslow and Braylon Edwards, while locker room cancers, gave opposing defensive coordinators nightmares. Josh Cribbs is the only player on this team who is a threat to score when he has the ball. Opposing coaches, outside of special teams coordinators, scheming to defeat the Browns have an easy preparation week.

Please bring in an established NFL coach or executive such as Mike Holmgren or Bill Cowher and give that person the full authority to turn this mess around. As for Mangini, he can be given another year, but he must understand that his power does not extend beyond the locker room. It is your job to establish a solid tone for the organization, and, if you can’t do this, sell the team.
