Varsity and JV Hockey Gear Up for Success

Written by Alex Norton '12 on November 20, 2009.

The success of the 2009-10 varsity hockey team will depend on many young but talented players. Sophomore Tommy Mirabelli looks forward to the season, “Our team has a lot of youth but also a lot of talent and we’re looking forward to putting everything together down the stretch to make it a successful season.”

The 2008-09 varsity hockey team fell just short of the state championship game, losing to University School in the state semi-finals in double overtime, 3-2.  The game at Nationwide Arena in Columbus finished the St. Edward careers for the 15 seniors. Nevertheless they enjoyed thrilling season, including a breathtaking win in 6 overtimes over St. Ignatius in the district finals.

This season’s varsity will have many weapons including senior captains Ross Kivett, Andrew Novack, and Alex Kaserman and juniors Clay Jarrell, Riley Egan, and Danny O’Sullivan.  Junior Alex D’Angelo will lead a tough defensive corps with capable goaltending by senior goalie Justin Wisniewski.

As always the varsity schedule will be tough. In addition to rivalry games against Padua and St. Ignatius, the first game vs. University School will give the Eagles a chance to avenge their loss in the 2008-09 state semi-finals.

Last year’s JV hockey team, made up of 14 freshmen and 5 sophomores, finished the season with a winning record despite a very tough schedule that included trips to Michigan and Toronto. The team enjoyed several big wins, including the JV’s first-ever defeat of Detroit De La Salle, a satisfying win over rival St. Ignatius, and an overtime win over University School in the JV state championship game.

This year the JV’s look to have another strong team with the return of several key sophomores and a good class of freshmen.  They have the potential talent to defend their JV State Championship despite skating a challenging schedule that will feature tough teams from St. Ignatius and University School along with games against some from Detroit’s premier high school teams.  The JV’s will have also competent returning players, including sophomore captains Alex Norton on defense and Andrew Smith in net.
