Students Travel to Appalachia for Charity Work

Written by Alex Mann '10 on September 20, 2009.

For the fifth consecutive year, St. Ed’s students and faculty experienced a week of service and fun during the Appalachia Work Week.  In early June, students and faculty traveled to the Habitat for Humanity site in Pendleton County, West Virginia. With only one stoplight in the whole county, the location is rugged to say the least. The St. Ed’s team routinely worked eight-hour days, digging foundations, laying concrete, and putting in drainage pipes. The Eagles had no problem quickly getting through the week’s work schedule, and they completed about seven days of work in four and a half days. Their hard work was praised by their Habitat for Humanity supervisor who said that they were one of the best groups present.

The Eagles had time to rest midweek, and they went on the highly anticipated canoe trip. After their last workday, the Eagles were able to sit down and eat with some of the people that they had helped.  Campus Ministry plans to schedule this trip again this next summer.  Students who are interested can sign up in March for the trip in June, 2010.  •
