In front of a sell-out crowd in the first varsity football game at Coughlin Field in 31 years, the Eagles challenged H.D. Woodson (Washington D.C.). The team struggled in the first half but dominated the fourth quarter, to turn a close game into a 35-12 route. The running game was once again effective as Terrell Bates had another strong game and Brandon Cardinal ran for two scores. The defense only gave up six points and Robby Coury had a key interception to ensure the win.
Last Friday the Eagles matched up against Inkster (Michigan), which entered the game averaging 33 points per game this season. However, they struggled on the front lines defensively, and, despite their strong offensive production, they entered the game 0-2.
The player to watch was opposing quarterback Devin Gardner. Gardner, a Michigan commit, is 6-4 and runs a 4.5 40-yard dash. He was invited to the Elite 11 quarterback camp and is a skilled passer and dangerous runner. Gardner also has two talented wide receivers. The Eagles’ defense will have to contain Gardner and lock down the receivers to have a chance. Other keys to the game are avoiding turnovers, running the ball effectively and controlling the clock. If they can accomplish those things, they should pose a serious threat to Inkster.
In Week 2, the Eagles traveled to Euclid hoping to notch their first win after a Week 1 loss. The Eagles won 24-21, thanks in part to an offensive line that paved the way for a phenomenal rushing performance by Terrell Bates. Deonte Gibson recorded two sacks and was helped by the solid tackling of Mike Haney and the hard hitting of Odis Prunty. Mike DiNunzio sealed the win, nailing a 40-yard field goal late in the fourth quarter.
This season did not start out as the Eagle faithful hoped as the team lost to Mentor 28-15 in Week 1. It was not all negative though, as Germany Woods ran for 120 yards on 23 carries, and Robby Coury and Matt Newman played well on defense. The offense also amassed 530 total yards but turned the ball over six times. Penalties also played a role in the team’s defeat as the Eagles were flagged 22 times compared to only five for Mentor.
