Only in Cleveland. Only in this city could a baseball team go from the ALCS to disaster in a mere two years. Only here can a football team finish a season without scoring a touchdown in seven straight games and be worse the next season. Only in Cleveland can a quarterback throw three interceptions in one half and win the starting job for the next game.
Seemingly now more than ever this decade is the city stranded in the proverbial sports desert. The Indians are again at the start of a five year rebuilding cycle and face numerous questions about their pitching after losing two Cy Young Award winners.
Eric Mangini’s coaching tactics have turned the Browns into some twisted football combination of the Bad News Bears and the Indians from Major League. If he is not willing to be patient with Brady Quinn why should the fans, media, and organization hold faith in him?
Despite the struggles of these two teams, Cleveland fans can still take solace in the Cavaliers, right? Yet, the Cavs’ season has the ominous feeling of a bad circus instead of a championship drive. While there’s no arguing that this team has the most talent in the franchise’s history with the addition of Shaq, concerns exist with team chemistry. Delonte West’s gun charges and bipolar disorder along with Shaq’s history of going at both Kobe Bryant and Phil Jackson and Dwayne Wade and Pat Riley when things go sour loom over the team. Add that to Lebron’s free agency in 2010, and the dream season could turn south in a hurry.
Will the Cavaliers be the one to end the curse? It’s been 45 years, and we’re still waiting for an answer.
